Range of Toxicity

A) TOXICITY: The fatal dose of cyanide salts is estimated at 200 to 300 mg for an adult. Patients have survived ingestions of one gram of potassium cyanide and complete immersion in solutions of cyanide salts. Ingestion of as little as 50 mg of potassium cyanide has caused significant poisoning. HYDROGEN CYANIDE: The average fatal dose of hydrogen cyanide is 50 to 60 mg in humans. Human responses to hydrogen cyanide have been reported: Immediately fatal: 270 ppm (airborne concentration). Fatal after 10 minutes: 181 ppm (airborne concentration). Fatal after 30 minutes: 135 ppm. Fatal after 0.5 to 1 hours without immediate or late effects: 110 to 135 ppm. Tolerated for 0.5 to 1 hour without immediate or late effects: 45 to 54 ppm.
