A) Monitor vital signs and mental status.
B) Obtain initial serum lactate and arterial blood gases as needed to diagnose and monitor respiratory and metabolic acidosis.
C) Obtain an ECG and institute continuous cardiac monitoring in patients with moderate to severe toxicity.
D) MRI or CT of the brain are indicated if there are signs or symptoms of cerebral edema or coma or if there is a persistent abnormal neurologic exam.
A) A number of chemicals produce abnormalities of the hematopoietic system, liver, and kidneys. Monitoring complete blood count, urinalysis, and liver and kidney function tests is suggested for patients with significant exposure.
B) If respiratory tract irritation or respiratory depression is evident, monitor arterial blood gases, chest x-ray, and pulmonary function tests.
