Other Preventive MeasuresIf material not on fire and not involved in fire: Keep sparks, flames, and other sources of ignition away. Keep material out of water sources and sewers. Personnel protection: Avoid breathing dusts. Avoid bodily contact with the material ... Do not handle broken packages unless wearing appropriate personal protective equipment. Wash away any material which may have contacted the body with copious amounts of water or soap and water. Where possible, enclose operations and use local exhaust ventilation at the site of chemical release. If local exhaust ventilation or enclosure is not used, respirators should be worn. Wear protective gloves and clothing to prevent any reasonable probability of skin contact ... Wear dust-proof chemical goggles and face shield unless full facepiece respiratory protection is worn. Contact lenses should not be worn when working with this chemical. SRP: The scientific literature for the use of contact lenses by industrial workers is inconsistent. The benefits or detrimental effects of wearing contact lenses depend not only upon the substance, but also on factors including the form of the substance, characteristics and duration of the exposure, the uses of other eye protection equipment, and the hygiene of the lenses. However, there may be individual substances whose irritating or corrosive properties are such that the wearing of contact lenses would be harmful to the eye. In those specific cases, contact lenses should not be worn. In any event, the usual eye protection equipment should be worn even when contact lenses are in place. SRP: Local exhaust ventilation should be applied wherever there is an incidence of point source emissions or dispersion of regulated contaminants in the work area. Ventilation control of the contaminant as close to its point of generation is both the most economical and safest method to minimize personnel exposure to airborne contaminants. Prevention of manganese poisoning is primarily a question of suppression of toxic dusts and fumes, and effective industrial hygiene and medical supervision ... Good general ventilation of dust and fumes at source is essential ... Independent respirators may be used for special applications ... /Manganese, alloys and compounds/ High standard of personal hygiene is essential, and personal cleanliness, compulsory showering after work, a change of clothing, and a ban on eating at work place are necessary. /Manganese, alloys and compounds/ SRP: Wastewater from contaminant suppression, cleaning of protective clothing/equipment, or contaminated sites should be contained and evaluated for subject chemical or decomposition product concentrations. Concentrations shall be lower than applicable environmental discharge or disposal criteria. Alternatively, pretreatment and/or discharge to a permitted wastewater treatment facility is acceptable only after review by the governing authority and assurance that "pass through" violations will not occur. Due consideration shall be given to remediation worker exposure (inhalation, dermal and ingestion) as well as fate during treatment, transfer and disposal. If it is not practicable to manage the chemical in this fashion, it must be evaluated in accordance with EPA 40 CFR Part 261, specifically Subpart B, in order to determine the appropriate local, state and federal requirements for disposal. SRP: Contaminated protective clothing should be segregated in a manner that results in no direct personal contact by personnel who handle, dispose of, or clean the clothing. Quality assurance procedures to confirm the efficacy of the cleaning procedures should be implemented prior to the decontaminated protective clothing being returned for reuse by the workers. Contaminated clothing (including shoes/socks) should not be taken home at end of shift, but should remain at employee's place of work for cleaning. When using with strong acids to destroy organic matter, perform reaction behind safety barrier. /Permanganates/ If employees' clothing has had any possibility of being contaminated with barium carbonate, barium chloride, barium nitrate ... or liq containing these cmpd, employees should change into uncontaminated clothing before leaving the work premises. ... Clothing contaminated with barium carbonate, barium chloride, barium nitrate ... should be placed in closed containers for storage until it can be discarded or until provision is made for the removal of contaminant from the clothing. If the clothing is to be laundered or otherwise cleaned to remove the contaminant, the person performing the operation should be informed of contaminant's hazardous properties. ... Non-impervious clothing which becomes contaminated with barium carbonate, barium chloride, barium nitrate ... should be removed promptly and not reworn until the contaminant is removed from the clothing. /Soluble barium cmpd/ Skin that becomes contaminated with barium carbonate, barium chloride, or barium nitrate should be promptly washed or showered to remove any contaminant. In the case of barium carbonate, employees should use soap or mild detergent and water for washing purposes. /Soluble barium cmpd/ Eating and smoking should not be permitted in areas where solid barium carbonate, barium chloride, barium nitrate ... or liq containing these cmpd are handled, processed, or stored. Employees who handle barium carbonate, barium chloride, barium nitrate ... or liq containing these cmpd should wash their hands thoroughly before eating, smoking, or using toilet facilities. In the case of barium carbonate, employees should use soap or mild detergent and water for washing purposes. /Soluble barium cmpd/ The worker should immediately wash the skin when it becomes contaminated. /Soluble barium compounds (as Ba) except barium sulfate/ Work clothing that becomes wet or significantly contaminated should be removed or replaced. /Soluble barium compounds (as Ba) except barium sulfate/ Workers whose clothing may have become contaminated should change into uncontaminated clothing before leaving the work premises. /Soluble barium compounds (as Ba) except barium sulfate/ |
