PolymerizationWhen not absolutely pure or stabilized, hydrogen cyanide polymerizes spontaneously with explosive violence. Can polymerize explosively at 50-60 deg C or in the presents of traces of alkali. May violently polymerize spontaneously in absence of inhibitors or if impure. Presence of alkali favors explosive polymerization. Amines, oxidizers, acids, sodium hydroxide, calcium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, water, caustics, ammonia [Note: Can polymerize at 122 - 140 deg F]. |
