Disposal Methods

SRP: The most favorable course of action is to use an alternative chemical product with less inherent propensity for occupational exposure or environmental contamination. Recycle any unused portion of the material for its approved use or return it to the manufacturer or supplier. Ultimate disposal of the chemical must consider: the material's impact on air quality; potential migration in soil or water; effects on animal, aquatic, and plant life; and conformance with environmental and public health regulations.
Biodegradation studies have provided conflicting evidence of the biodegradability of propylene glycol dinitrate ... by conventional sewage treatment methods. Suggested alternative treatment methods have included carbon absorption techniques combined with base hydrolysis of propylene glycol dinitrate to the biodegradable propylene glycol, and decomposition of propylene glycol dinitrate using sodium sulfide. Bench-scale wet air oxidation screening tests conducted at 280 C for 60 minutes indicate excellent removal of propylene glycol dinitrate from waste streams that are too dilute to incinerate and too toxic to biotreat.
